In response to the deterioration of coral reefs in Akumal, the Akumal Ecological Center has implemented a restoration project since 2014. This project has been evolving since then and has had the participation of different partners that have contributed to its progress.
In order to make this project more efficient and productive CEA allied with the INAPESCA CRIAP in 2018. In this regards, considerable progress has been possible due to the active participation and the technical-scientific assistance of Dr. Claudia Padilla Souza and CRIAP assistants, the financial support by MAR Fund and the CEA Council itself, and technical and operational support from the Healthy Reefs Initiative Global Vision International, UNAM, CONANP, local Akumal diving centers and other partners in the region.
Recently, as a product of such collaboration INAPESCA-CRIAP organized the event called “Restauratón” in Akumal, as part of the State Government's commitment to carry out massive sowing of coral colonies in Quintana Roo. The Restauratón de Akumal was sponsored by the CEA with support from the Akumal Dive Shop and other local businesses. The CRIAP and CEA staff trained dive shop staff and other collaborators to carry out assisted dispersal and seeding of coral fragments of the species Acropora cervicornis, Acropora palmata, Orbicella faveolata and Montastraea cavernosa in two reefs Akumal. In total, more than 3 thousand coral fragments both locally sourced and from CRIAP nurseries were outplanted in Akumal on July 18 and 19 with the support of more than 20 people with more than 12 hours of collective work. The fragments were planted in 20 artificial structures and in “mojoneras” made with concrete.
This effort, together with the more than 500 colonies planted between 2014 and 2017 by CEA partners, with around 300 corals planted by the CEA and GVI since October 2018, with almost one thousand corals planted at the beginning of July 2019 by the CRIAP and CEA, the almost 300 stabilized fragments in nurseries that function as “seedbeds” for coral dispersion in Akumal, represent enormous advances for coral restoration actions in this community. It is expected that based on these results and those that remain during the year, the financing required to continue this project in the medium and long term can be promoted and thus recover the environmental functions and services provided by the Akumal reefs.

Como respuesta al deterioro de los arrecifes de coral en Akumal, el Centro Ecológico ha implementado un proyecto de restauración desde 2014. Este proyecto ha ido evolucionando desde entonces, y ha tenido la participación de diferentes socios que han contribuido en el avance del mismo. Buscando centrar el enfoque en acciones que permitieran mayor eficiencia y productividad al proyecto, el CEA se alió con el CRIAP INAPESCA en 2018. Así, bajo la asistencia técnico-científica de la Dra. Claudia Padilla Souza y asistentes del CRIAP, sumado al apoyo financiero por parte del MARFund, la Iniciativa Arrecifes Saludables y el mismo Concejo del CEA, además del apoyo vital de otros socios tales como Global Vision International, la UNAM, la CONANP, los centros de buceo locales de Akumal y otros socios de la región, se ha avanzado sustancialmente en esta actividad.
Muestra de ello fue el reciente evento denominado por el CRIAP como “Restauratón” en Akumal, como parte del compromiso del Gobierno Estatal para realizar una siembra masiva de colonias de coral en Quintana Roo. El Restauratón de Akumal, auspiciado financieramente por el CEA y con apoyo del Akumal Dive Shop y otros negocios locales, el staff del CRIAP y del CEA capacitaron a personal de las tiendas de buceo y otros colaboradores para llevar a cabo acciones de dispersión asistida y sembrado de fragmentos de coral de las especies Acropora cervicornis, Acropora palmata, Orbicella faveolata y Montastraea cavernosa en dos arrecifes de Akumal. En total, se tiene un estimado de más de 3mil fragmentos de coral tanto de origen local como provenientes de viveros del CRIAP sembrados en Akumal los días 18 y 19 de Julio por más de 20 personas en más de 12 horas de trabajo colectivo. Los fragmentos fueron sembrados en 20 estructuras artificiales y en “mojoneras” elaboradas con concreto.
Este esfuerzo, aunado a los casi mil corales sembrados a principios de julio por el CRIAP y CEA en conjunto con los alrededor de 300 corales sembrados por el CEA y GVI desde Octubre de 2018, los casi 300 fragmentos estabilizados en viveros que fungen de “semilleros” para la dispersión de coral en Akumal, además de las más de 500 colonias sembradas entre 2014 y 2017 por parte de otros socios de CEA, representan enormes avances para las acciones de restauración coralina en esta localidad. Se espera que con base en estos resultados y los que restan en el año se pueda promover el financiamiento requerido para darle continuidad a este proyecto en el mediano y largo plazo y con ello lograr recuperar las funciones y servicios ambientales que otorgan los arrecifes de Akumal.
