The fortune of having a sustainable home in Akumal.

Hello, I'm Elizabeth Bautista, coordinator of Environmental Education at the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA), today I will talk about a house with a good model of sustainability that I hope will motivate us so much that we begin to copy this model for our homes or companies, why not?

First of all, a huge thank you to the owners of this impressive home located on Half Moon Bay in Akumal, Quintana Roo. Lisa Wilson and her husband Alex welcomed me with the kindness and simplicity of great people and grateful for life, that was the best start of my tour of their impressive home.

This house has fresh air inlets with its large windows, maintaining a pleasant and comforting climate inside, It also has solar panels making a considerable reduction in the consumption of fossil fuel, it has sensors to turn off the lights in front of the beach at 10.00 p.m., so as not to affect wildlife with light pollution, there are also sensors in the bedroom balcony windows so that if the air conditioner is on, it turns off immediately avoiding unnecessary energy waste and of course all its lighting is based on LED lights.

Now let's talk about how they manage their waste; This house has wastewater treatment by flocculation using the treated water to irrigate its gardens and green areas in general. Under this treatment, the sludge is being recirculated and the flocculating bacteria feed on it, therefore, no residual sludge is generated that must be removed from the system and taken to a special treatment as in other wastewater treatment systems.

As for solid waste, they have a selective separation system, which they implemented from day one in their wonderful home, it was for this reason that we were invited to this beautiful house for the first time, as they expressed concern that the separated and classified waste will be removed by the municipal cleaning truck and often ends up in the landfill. Now they entered the Akumal Cero Program with great enthusiasm, monthly delivering their classified waste to be disposed of correctly by a company that will send it to the recycling industry, reassessing it and returning it to the production chain.

Let's talk about drinking water, this wonderful house has filters that soften the water without excessively removing all the minerals so you can drink the water from the tap, in addition to preventing your pipes from having mineral incrustation problems inside. But that's not all, they have efficient rainwater harvesting, having underground tanks to reserve water in the months of higher rainfall and thus not suffer shortages, giving it a plus that the consumption of the municipal drinking water network is minimal or null.

Anticipating the future and seeing the current problems due to this important water resource, they have a desalination plant that they could use to supply their home with fresh and potable water, largely satisfying their needs.

The Wilsons think about all the details, that's why to prevent the evaporation of the water in their pool they have a plastic cover, in addition to avoiding excessive consumption of water to fill the pool, it also saves large amounts of chlorine and chemical stabilizers to maintain the pool with the quality of the water in healthy conditions for its occupants.

Sustainability is not at odds with modernity and beauty, this house is comfortable, elegant, with well-designed spaces, and above all with a minimal impact on the environment. La fortuna de tener una vivienda sostenible en Akumal.

Hola soy Elizabeth Bautista, coordinadora de educación ambiental en el centro ecológico Akumal, hoy les hablaré de una casa con un buen modelo de sustentabilidad y que espero nos motive tanto que comencemos a copiar este modelo para nuestros hogares o empresas ¿Por qué no?

En primer lugar, un enorme agradecimiento a los propietarios de esta formidable casa ubicada en la bahía de Media Luna en Akumal, Quintana Roo. Lisa Wilson y su esposo Alex nos recibieron con la amabilidad y sencillez de grandes personas y agradecidos a la vida, ese fue el mejor comienzo de mi recorrido por su formidable casa.

Esta casa cuenta con entradas de aire fresco con sus grandes ventanales, manteniendo un clima agradable y reconfortante en su interior, además cuenta con paneles solares haciendo una reducción considerable en el consumo de energía fósil, tiene sensores para apagar las luces frente a la playa a las 22.00 horas, para no afectar la vida silvestre con contaminación lumínica, también hay sensores en las ventanas de los balcones de los dormitorios para que si el clima artificial está encendido, se apague de inmediato evitando un derroche innecesario de energía y por supuesto toda su iluminación está basada en luces led.

Ahora hablemos de la gestión de sus residuos; esta casa cuenta con tratamiento de aguas residuales por floculación utilizando el agua tratada para el riego de sus jardines y zonas verdes en general. Bajo este tratamiento, los lodos están siendo recirculados y las bacterias floculantes se alimentan de ellos, por lo que no se generan lodos residuales que deben ser retirados del sistema y llevados a un tratamiento especial como en otros sistemas de tratamiento de aguas residuales.

En cuanto a los residuos sólidos, cuentan con un sistema de separación selectiva, el cual implementaron desde el primer día en su maravillosa casa, en este sentido es que nos invitan a esta bonita casa por primera vez, ya que expresaron su preocupación de que los residuos separados y clasificados sean retirados por el camión de limpieza municipal y, a menudo, acaba en el relleno sanitario. Ahora ingresaron al Programa Akumal Cero con gran entusiasmo, entregando mensualmente sus residuos clasificados para que sean dispuestos correctamente por una empresa que los enviará a la industria del reciclaje, valorándolos nuevamente y devolviéndolos a la cadena de producción.

Hablemos de agua potable, esta maravillosa casa cuenta con filtros que ablandan el agua sin eliminar en exceso todos los minerales para que el agua se pueda beber del grifo, además de evitar que tus tuberías tengan problemas de incrustaciones minerales en su interior. Pero eso no es todo, cuentan con una eficiente captación de agua de lluvia, disponiendo de tanques subterráneos para reservarla en los meses de mayor precipitación y así no sufrir desabastecimientos, además de que el consumo de la red municipal de agua potable es mínimo o nulo.

Además, anticipándose al futuro y viendo los problemas actuales debido a este importante recurso hídrico, cuentan con una planta desaladora que podrían utilizar para abastecer su hogar con agua dulce y potable, satisfaciendo ampliamente sus necesidades.

Los Wilson piensan en todos los detalles, por eso para evitar la evaporación del agua en su piscina cuentan con una cubierta de plástico y esto, además de evitar un consumo excesivo de agua para llenar la piscina, también ahorra grandes cantidades de cloro y estabilizadores químicos para mantener la piscina con la calidad del agua en condiciones saludables para sus ocupantes.

La sostenibilidad no está peleada con la modernidad y la belleza, esta casa es cómoda, elegante, con espacios bien diseñados y sobre todo con un mínimo impacto en el medio ambiente.
