A group of incredibly dedicated residents has been instrumental in supporting the turtle program, including their help with the not so glamorous, yet important behind-the-scenes work.

Why join the VT group to protect turtles? What makes it special?
Working with the marine environment has always been one of my passions. I have always wanted to do something to help nature, and VT gave me the opportunity. VT to me is a group of people who demonstrate their passion by doing the hard work of helping turtles, with no reward other than seeing them thrive. That feeling of commitment and devotion motivates me to want to help and be part of this group. Also, it offers a welcoming environment, where it is possible to acquire knowledge in a proactive way.
What activity do you do? What is your role at CEA's sea turtle camp?
My role is to be the new member. I help in any way I can, some will say that I became the nest cleaning specialist. I also support night guards and where needed.
How important do you think the work of the VT is?
I think the role of the group is fundamental. We are the support team in this sea turtle conservation program. The group does a very important job, especially in this scenario of the COVID contingency. Without VT's support for turtle conservation work in the area, the turtle camp work would be a very heavy burden on the turtles in CEA.
There are many different NGOs… what made you fall in love with this project?
Due to the attitude and disposition of the members, I am motivated by the passion and disinterest in the love they have for turtles.
When you come home after spending a morning helping nesting moms… what are you taking with you? What does it bring you on a personal level?
The satisfaction of having the opportunity to see and live with nature and its wonders, one of them, sea turtles.
What qualities do you think it takes to volunteer in the association?
Love for turtles, be persistent, committed, dynamic and proactive.
Do you remember your first day as a volunteer? How was your experience?
I remember my first task was cleaning nests. It was somewhat uncomfortable, tiring. I also remember the bad smell of the eggs in the nest, in the end I was very happy because we took out more than 20 live turtles from the nest. It was amazing, that made me sure to want to be part of the group.
And how was your first contact with a turtle? What surprised you the most?
My first contact with turtles was when I was studying at the university, I remember it was with a dead turtle, it gave me the opportunity to do an autopsy and get to know them inside. But what amazes me most about turtles is the dedication with which they are mothers. How they make their nests so perfect.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering or not?
I would encourage anyone to be a part of this adventure, but I would warn them that it will be heavy and stinky work, but with a great reward: living with the turtles.
Due to my training as a marine biologist, I would recommend including certain data that would allow us to perform analyzes. Such as the temperature of the nest and environmental factors, which would allow us to produce useful information for more people.

Respect the turtles and the environment, and if there is someone who wants to be part of this group to support the turtles, try it and contact us.

¿Por qué unirse al grupo VT para proteger a las tortugas? ¿Qué lo hace especial? ¿Es fácil, divertido, dinámico, comprometido? Trabajar con el ambiente marino siempre a sido una de mis pasiones. Siempre he querido hacer algo para ayudar a la naturaleza, y VT me dio la oportunidad. VT para mi, es un grupo de personas que demuestran su pasión haciendo el trabajo duro de ayudar a las tortugas, sin recompensa más que verlas prosperar. Ese sentimiento de compromiso y devoción, me motiva a querer ayudar y ser parte de este grupo. También, que ofrece un ambiente acogedor, donde se logra adquirir conocimientos de manera proactiva.
¿Qué actividades realizas? ¿Cuál es tu papel en el campamento de tortugas marinas de CEA? Mi rol es ser el nuevo integrante. Ayudo en todo lo que pueda, algunos podrían decir que me convertí en el especialista en limpiar nidos. También apoyo en guardias nocturnas y donde se requiera.
¿Qué tan importante crees que es el trabajo de los VT?
Creo que el rol de grupo es escencial. Somos el brazo activo en este programa de conservación de las tortugas marinas. El grupo realiza un trabajo muy importante, en especial en este escenario de la contingencia por el COVID. Sin el apoyo de VT el trabajo de conservación de la tortuga en la zona, el trabajo del campamento tortuguero sería una carga muy pesada para los tortugueros del CEA.
Hay muchas ONG diferentes ... ¿qué te hizo enamorarte de este proyecto?
Por la actitud y disposición de los integrantes, me motiva la pasión y el desinterés. El amor que muestran al ayudar a las tortugas.
Cuando llegas a casa después de pasar una mañana ayudando a las madres que anidan ... ¿qué te llevas a nivel personal?
La satisfacción de tener la oportunidad de ver y convivir con la naturaleza y sus maravillas, una de ellas, las tortugas marinas.
¿Qué cualidades crees que se necesitan para ser voluntario en la asociación?
Amar a las tortugas, perseverante, comprometido, dinámico, proactivo.
¿Recuerdas tu primer día como VT? ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia?
Recuerdo que mi primera tarea fue limpiar nidos. Fue algo incómodo y cansado. También recuerdo el mal olor de los huevos en el nido, al final me alegré mucho porque sacamos del nido más de 20 tortugas. Fue increíble, eso me hizo estar seguro de querer ser parte del grupo.
Y, ¿cómo fue tu primer contacto con una tortuga?
Mi primer contacto con las tortugas fue en la universidad, recuerdo que fue con una tortuga sin vida lo que me dio la oportunidad de realizarle una autopsia y conocerlas por dentro. Pero lo que más me sorprende de las tortugas es la dedicación con la que son madres. Como hacen sus nidos tan perfectos.
¿Qué le dirías a alguien que está considerando ser Voluntourist?
Le alentaría a ser parte de esta aventura, pero le diría que debe saber que será un trabajo pesado y apestoso, pero con una gran recompensa, convivir con las tortugas.
Si pudieras cambiar algo para mejorar el campamento de tortugas CEA, ¿qué sería?
Por mi preparación como biólogo marino, me gustaría incluir ciertos datos que nos permitieran realizar análisis. Como la temperatura del nido y factores ambientales, lo que nos permitiría producir información útil para más personas.
