A group of incredibly dedicated residents has been instrumental in supporting the turtle program, including their help with the not so glamorous, yet important behind-the-scenes work.

In 2009, we saw a special for Akumal Beach Resort. It was mid-September and the turtle program was mostly over. We were still so excited to see actual turtle nests and the turtles in the bay that we had to come back the following year but earlier. The turtle camp was run by Mariano Saurez and Sophia Sarre.
There was a man staying at the hotel, that year, that was a volunteer. He took us out to show us the work and told us that CEA would need help with cleaning nests when the summer help went home. We immediately went home and rebooked to come back in October.
Nest cleaning was our first specialty.
Sophia asked us to come back in July 2011 to work nights with the nesting turtles. So started our second part of our education.
Over the years, we fluctuated between coming in the Fall for nest cleaning and summers for nesting season. We have had a wonderful mentor and friend in Mauricio.
It has been an amazing experience that we love. There is no way to describe what it is like to see a female build a nest and lay her eggs, to see hatchlings boil from a nest or when cleaning a nest, to find hatchings that need help getting out.
We have had sad experiences, funny experiences and such joy. This is such an important part of our lives and we hope we will be able to enjoy this for many years. We keep a diary every year. They are memories we will always cherish.

En 2009, vimos un especial para el hotel Akumal Beach Resort. Era mediados de septiembre y para entonces, el programa de tortugas había terminado. Seguíamos tan emocionados de tener la oportunidad de ver nidos de tortugas reales y a las tortugas en la bahía que tuvimos que programar nuestro regreso al año siguiente. En ese entonces, el campamento de tortugas era dirigido por Mariano Saurez y Sophia Sarre.
Había un hombre alojado en el hotel, ese año, que era voluntario. Nos llevó a ver su labor como voluntario y nos dijo que CEA necesitaría ayuda para limpiar los nidos cuando la ayuda de verano se fuera a casa. Inmediatamente nos fuimos a casa y volvimos a reservar para volver en octubre.
La limpieza de nidos fue nuestra primera especialidad.
Sophia nos pidió que volviéramos en julio de 2011 para trabajar por las noches con las tortugas anidadoras. Así comenzó nuestra segunda parte de nuestra educación.
Con los años, fluctuamos entre venir en otoño para limpiar los nidos y veranos para la temporada de anidación. Hemos tenido un maravilloso mentor y amigo: Mauricio.
Ha sido una experiencia increíble que amamos. No hay forma de describir cómo es ver a una mamá tortuga construir su nido y poner sus huevos, ver a las crías eclosionar de su nido o al limpiar un nido, encontrar crías que necesitan ayuda para salir.
Hemos tenido experiencias tristes, experiencias divertidas y tanta alegría. Esta es una parte tan importante de nuestras vidas y esperamos poder disfrutarla durante muchos años. Mantenemos un diario todos los años. Son recuerdos que siempre apreciaremos.
