Meeting the Voluntourist: Anne DeBose
A group of incredibly dedicated residents has been instrumental in supporting the turtle program, including their help with the not so glamorous, yet important behind-the-scenes work.
Anne DeBose is from Tomball, Texas - she has been living in TAO Community for seven years.

Why join the VT group to protect turtles? What makes it special?
I saw a turtle lay her nest and wanted to help conserve the turtle environment.
It is special when you see a nest hatch and know that I helped make it happen.
What activity do you do? What is your role at CEA's sea turtle camp?
In the past, I have patrolled the beaches for turtle activity and ensured homeowners are in compliance with keeping beaches clear of obstacles, correct lighting, and also to educate tourists on protecting turtles and their nesting areas.
How important do you think the work of the VT is?
Our work is critical to supplement the government's efforts to preserve these endangered species.
There are many different NGOs… what made you fall in love with this project?
I get to work with my neighbors and share my commitment to this important environmental cause.
When you come home after spending a morning helping nesting moms… what are you taking with you? What does it bring you on a personal level?
I get the satisfaction that I helped and make a difference to this important cause.
What qualities do you think it takes to volunteer in the association?
Concern for the environment and willingness to make a commitment to this program.
Do you remember your first day as a volunteer? How was your experience?
Before joining the organization, I witnessed a turtle coming up the beach and was amazed not only by her size but her determination to overcome obstacles so she could make her nest and lay her eggs.
And how was your first contact with a turtle? What surprised you the most?
I would encourage anyone to join the program for the positive experience of witnessing mama turtles laying their eggs and also watching hatching of baby turtles.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering or not?
I would encourage anyone to invest a little bit of their time to enjoy the experience and knowledge that you are helping the turtle population.

¿Por qué unirse al grupo VT para proteger a las tortugas? ¿Qué lo hace especial? ¿Es fácil, divertido, dinámico, comprometido? En una ocasión ví a una tortuga poner su nido, desde entonces quise ayudar a conservar el medio ambiente y a las tortugas.
Es especial cuando ves nacer un nido y sabes que ayudaste a que sucediera.
¿Qué actividades realizas? ¿Cuál es tu papel en el campamento de tortugas marinas de CEA? En el pasado, he patrullado las playas en busca de actividad de tortugas y me aseguré de que los propietarios cumplan con mantener las playas libres de obstáculos, iluminación correcta y también de educar a los turistas sobre la protección de las tortugas y sus áreas de anidación.
¿Qué tan importante crees que es el trabajo de los VT?
Nuestro trabajo es fundamental para complementar los esfuerzos del gobierno para preservar estas especies en peligro de extinción.
Hay muchas ONG diferentes ... ¿qué te hizo enamorarte de este proyecto?
Tengo la oportunidad de trabajar con mis vecinos y compartir mi compromiso con esta importante causa ambiental.
Cuando llegas a casa después de pasar una mañana ayudando a las madres que anidan ... ¿qué te llevas a nivel personal? Tengo la satisfacción de haber ayudado y marcar la diferencia en esta importante causa.
¿Qué cualidades crees que se necesitan para ser voluntario en la asociación?
Preocupación por el medio ambiente y voluntad de comprometerse con este programa.
¿Recuerdas tu primer día como VT? ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia?
Antes de unirme a la organización, presencié una tortuga que subía por la playa y me sorprendió no solo su tamaño, sino su determinación de superar obstáculos para poder hacer su nido y poner sus huevos.
Y, ¿cómo fue tu primer contacto con una tortuga?
Yo animaría a cualquiera a unirse al programa por la experiencia positiva de presenciar a las mamás tortugas poner sus huevos y también observar la salida de nido de las bebés tortugas.
¿Qué le dirías a alguien que está considerando ser Voluntourist?
Animaría a cualquiera a invertir un poco de su tiempo para disfrutar de la experiencia y el conocimiento de que está ayudando a la población de tortugas.
