Meeting the Voluntourist: Leslie Griffith
A group of incredibly dedicated residents has been instrumental in supporting the turtle program, including their help with the not so glamorous, yet important behind-the-scenes work.

Why join the VT group to protect turtles? I fell in love with the sea turtles (and Akumal) over 10 years ago when my husband and I first began coming here on vacation. Volunteering to help protect the sea turtles was and is my dream “job” for retirement.
What makes it special? All of the amazing people that care about the turtles – not only the other dedicated VTs but also the maintenance and security workers on Half Moon Bay and even the tourists that are always so willing to help us with a turtle in the pool, sargasso removal when a nest is almost ready to hatch, crowd control when there is a turtle on the beach or a big smile when they learn we have another nest on the beach or hatchlings safely to the sea!
Is it easy, fun, dynamic, committed? It is fun but can also be physically tiring - being on the beach at 6 am is not my idea of “easy” (although the sunrises are frequently spectacular) nor is stumbling over obstacles during a night callout to the beach but watching a nesting turtle lay her eggs and depart to the sea is always spectacular! Volunteering as a VT definitely requires a commitment of time and effort to both the turtles and your VT team.
What activity do you do? What is your role at CEA's sea turtle camp? I’m a VolunTourist (VT) for Half Moon Bay. This is my second year as a volunteer with the program. I mostly patrol in the mornings to identify/document turtle crawls or nests and then erase their tracks so the beach is clean for the night but I also will check nests during daytime and respond to callouts at night to assist with nesting mammas or hatchlings when needed.
How important do you think the work of the VT is? I believe we are a critical part of the CEA team and bring a passion for the protection of these amazing and endangered creatures. Last year we assisted the CEA turtle technicians but this year without them, we will be an even more critical part of the protection effort.
There are many different NGOs… what made you fall in love with this project? A love of the sea turtles and desire to be a part of my community in Akumal.
When you come home after spending a morning helping nesting moms… what are you taking with you? A smile.
What does it bring you on a personal level? The satisfaction that I’m doing something to help these incredible creatures that I care so much about.
What qualities do you think it takes to volunteer in the association? Passion for the sea turtles, a commitment to be part of a dedicated team.
Do you remember your first day as a volunteer? Of course! How was your experience? Amazing as it has been every day since. Every day I learn more and more.
And how was your first contact with a turtle? My first contact was seeing juvenile sea turtles while snorkeling in Akumal Bay. What surprised you the most? How peaceful and beautiful they are.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering or not? Come walk on the beach with us in the morning to understand what’s involved.
If you could change something to improve the CEA turtle camp, what would it be? The program needs more organization and an earlier start on training and onboarding new volunteers.
What message would you like to share with the readers of this short review? The sea turtles are very special creatures and Akumal is a very special place – both deserve our protection. We are all very fortunate to be able to live in or visit this beautiful environment.

¿Porqué te enlistaste como voluntaria en el Campamento Tortuguero de CEA?
Me enamoré de las tortugas marinas (y Akumal) hace más de 10 años cuando mi esposo y yo comenzamos a venir aquí de vacaciones. Hacer voluntariado para ayudar a proteger a las tortugas marinas fue y es mi "trabajo" soñado para la jubilación.
¿Qué lo hace especial? Todas las personas increíbles que se preocupan por las tortugas, no solo los demás VT dedicados, sino también los trabajadores de mantenimiento y seguridad en Bahía Media Luna e incluso los turistas que siempre están dispuestos a ayudarnos cuando es necesario, ya sea ayudando a una tortuga salir de una piscina o removiendo el sargazo del paso de las tortuguitas cuando están a punto de salir del nido, ayudar a controla a las multitudes cuando hay una tortuga en la playa o regalarnos una gran sonrisa cuando se enteran de que tenemos otro nido en la playa o crías a salvo en el mar.
¿Es fácil, divertido, dinámico, comprometido? Es divertido pero también puede ser físicamente agotador: estar en la playa a las 6 de la mañana no es mi idea de "fácil" (aunque los amaneceres son a menudo espectaculares) ni se tropieza con obstáculos durante una llamada nocturna a la playa pero observando una tortuga anidando poner sus huevos y partir hacia el mar siempre es espectacular! El voluntariado como VT definitivamente requiere un compromiso de tiempo y esfuerzo tanto para las tortugas como para su equipo de TV.
¿Qué actividades realizas? ¿Cuál es tu papel en el campamento de tortugas marinas de CEA? Soy Voluntourist (VT) para Bahía Media Luna. Este es mi segundo año como voluntaria en el campamento. Principalmente patrullo la playa por las mañanas para identificar / documentar a las tortugas anidadoras o sus nidos, luego de haber registrado la información en los formatos del campamento, borro los rastros para que la playa esté limpia durante la noche, también respondo a las llamadas de emergencia durante la noche para ayudar a las mamás o crías cuando sea necesario.
¿Qué tan importante crees que es el trabajo del VT es? Considero que somos una parte crucial del equipo de CEA ya que nos apasiona la protección de estas increíbles criaturas en peligro de extinción. El año pasado asistimos a los técnicos de tortugas de CEA, pero este año sin ellos, seremos una parte aún más crítica del esfuerzo de protección.
Hay muchas ONG diferentes ... ¿qué te hizo enamorarte de este proyecto? El amor por las tortugas marinas y el deseo de ser parte de mi comunidad en Akumal.
Cuando llegas a casa después de pasar una mañana ayudando a las madres que anidan ... ¿qué te llevas? una sonrisa.
¿Qué te deja a nivel personal? la satisfacción de que estoy haciendo algo para ayudar a estas increíbles criaturas que me importan tanto.
¿Qué cualidades crees que se necesitan para ser voluntario en la asociación? Pasión por las tortugas marinas, comprometerse a ser parte de un equipo dedicado.
¿Recuerdas tu primer día como VT? ¡Por supuesto! ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia? Increíble, como lo ha venido siendo desde el día que inicié. Aprendiendo más y más día con día.
¿Y cómo fue tu primer contacto con una tortuga? ver a tortugas juveniles mientras hacia snorkel en Akumal. ¿Qué fue lo que más te asombró? que tan pacíficas y hermosas son.
¿Qué le dirías a alguien que está considerando ser Voluntourist? Ven a caminar a la playa con nosotros por las mañanas para entender lo que implica.
Si pudieras cambiar algo para mejorar el campamento de tortugas CEA, ¿qué sería? El programa necesita más organización e iniciar un poco antes los entrenamientos y la capacitación de nuevos voluntarios.
¿Qué mensaje te gustaría compartir con los lectores de esta breve reseña? Las tortugas marinas son unas criaturas muy especiales y Akumal es un lugar muy especial. Somos muy afortunados de ser capaces de poder vivir y/o visitar este hermoso ambiente.
