Meeting the Voluntourist: Mike Moorman
A group of incredibly dedicated residents has been instrumental in supporting the turtle program, including their help with the not so glamorous, yet important behind-the-scenes work.
Mike Moorman is from Palm Springs, California, and worked for 35 years in the medical field. He has been a Mexico Permanent Resident since 2018, living on Half Moon Bay.

Since “Akumal” means the place of the turtle, in Mayan, it only makes sense to me to be involved with the CEA turtle conservation program.
I am part of a team on BML. We are all ex-pats who have been involved with professional areas of the workforce. We all have similar interests in the turtle program. Our motto is: “It is all for the turtles.” This team has been together for two years and we not only work together, we socialize in many different events. We are wonderful friends. In addition to the commitment to the turtles, it is the team that keeps me coming back.
Helping or assisting Mother Nature is most gratifying. I attempt to keep everything as natural as possible and protect the turtles to expand their population. They live in a harsh environment and anything we do helps.
Each year, the turtle program is a six-month commitment for me. I was trained last year by a wonderful Wildlife Veterinarian and her biologists. The work is definitely more than walking on the beach. A lot of what I do is public relations with the tourists.
This season (2020), the Voluntourists are possibly the most important part of the Turtle program. We are on the beach every morning and night weekly. We record the nests, false crawls, and assist when the hatchlings arrive 50 days or so after the mother has nested. That is the allure of this program: seeing the beneficial results of our diligent protection when the hatchlings make their way out of the nest and into the sea.
If you have the time, commitment, and willingness to assist Mother Nature, this would be a program for your interest. CEA certainly could use the manpower.

Voluntourist: grupo de residentes, increíblemente dedicados, quienes apoyan el programa de conservación y protección de tortugas marinas en Akumal, desde recorridos diurnos a ayudar con el trabajo no tan glamoroso pero importante detrás de escena.

He sido voluntario la mayor parte de mi vida adulta. Comencé como entrenador, árbitro, me involucré con las juntas directivas de la escuelas, los programas estudiantiles y el Softbol Senior.
Ya que Akumal significa "lugar de las tortugas" en maya, para mí solo tiene sentido participar en el programa de Protección y Conservaciones de tortugas marinas de CEA.
Soy parte del equipo que vigila la playa de Bahía Media Luna. Todos somos expatriados que hemos estado involucrados en áreas profesionales de la fuerza laboral. Todos tenemos intereses similares en el programa de tortugas. Nuestro lema es: "Todo es para las tortugas". Este equipo ha estado unido por dos años y no solo trabajamos juntos, socializamos en muchos eventos diferentes. Somos amigos maravillosos además de compartir el compromiso con las tortugas, son una motivación para regresar año con año.
Ayudar o asistir a la Madre Naturaleza es lo más gratificante, he intentado mantener todo tan natural como me sea posible y proteger a las tortugas para que expandan su populación. Ellas viven en un ambiente complicado y toda ayuda cuenta.
Cada año, el programa de Conservación y Protección de Tortugas Marinas es un compromiso de seis meses para mí. El año pasado me entrenó una increíble veterinaria de vida silvestre y su equipo de biólogos. En definitiva, este trabajo es mucho más que sólo caminar por la playa. Mucho de lo que hago es Relaciones Públicas con los turistas.
Esta temporada (2020), el equipo de Voluntourist son, probablemente, el elemento más importante para el programa de Conservación y Protección de Tortugas Marinas. Estamos en la playa cada mañana y noche de la semana. Tomamos evidencia de los nidos, rastros falsos y asistimos a las crías de tortugas cuando surgen de sus nidos 50 días aproximadamente después de que su madre dejó los huevos en el nido. Eso es el atractivo del programa: viendo los resultados beneficiosos de nuestra diligente protección cuando las crías salen del nido y se adentran en el mar.
Si usted tiene tiempo, compromiso y ganas de ayudar a la Madre Naturaleza, este será el programa de tu interés, a CEA le vendrían bien la mano de obra.
