A group of incredibly dedicated residents has been instrumental in supporting the turtle program, including their help with the not so glamorous, yet important behind-the-scenes work.

Why join the VT group to protect turtles?
Two reasons:
I have four grandchildren. I want them to be able to come to Akumal for a visit and see these amazing creatures as I did several years ago.
My husband Eric and I joined the Akumal community last year when we retired. This is one way we contribute to the community by helping preserve our premiere treasure, the sea turtles.
What activity do you do? What is your role at CEA's sea turtle camp?
I am the principal worker at nightonHalf Moon Bay. I release rescued hatchlings. I observe the nesting mamas as they come ashore, steer them around obstacles and away from other nests, take physical measurements of the turtles, mark the nests, and document everything.
How important do you think the work of the VT is? It is important to the success of the program in a typical year. This year VTs are doing the lion's share of the work since we have no biologists/technicians on the beach.
There are many different NGOs… what made you fall in love with this project?
The presence of the sea turtles makes Akumal unique. When we selected our retirement home, we knew we wanted to be on the coast. We were comparing everywhere we visited with Akumal. Without realizing it, we had made Akumal our standard. So we said "why not Akumal?" and found a home here. CEA has been an integral part of Akumal from its very beginning.
When you come home after spending a morning helping nesting moms… what are you taking with you? What does it bring you on a personal level?
Although my body typically aches after a night on the beach and I am dead tired, there are many moments of magic. I watched a hundred plus hatchlings stream to the sea a couple of nights ago. I just sat down on the sand and laughed in delight. I get to rescue baby turtles when I clean out a nest. They probably would have died if someone hadn't done that. I get to experience nesting sea turtles as few people do. I touch and coo to them as I take my measurements. I pat them and wish them "Vaya con Dios" as they head out to the sea again. And I get to see the wonder in visitors' eyes as they see the hatchlings and mamas for the first time. It really is magical! Now if only took away the aches and pains!!!
What qualities do you think it takes to volunteer in the association?
You have to appreciate Mother Nature and be willing to do what needs to be done. Sometimes a mapache attacks a nest and there are broken eggs or dead bodies to deal with. VTs are the ones who clean up the mess and document it. It isn't always easy. We are out in the heat and humidity, raking and shoveling sand in the daytime. We are digging up nests to clean them and document the contents. At night we are working with wild animals who weigh 350 pounds and often do not cooperate as we try to direct them into or from an area of the beach. A sense of humor helps you through it. Being physically fit will help A LOT. We all joke we do turtle yoga, impossible positions in the sand. The question is whether we can get back up afterward.
Do you remember your first day as a volunteer? How was your experience?
I can't say I remember the first day. I remember meeting Roz for the first time. It was barely dawn and this lady was studying the sand behind our condo. I came out and asked what she was doing. I saw the tracks in the sand and she explained what they told her. I was hooked.
And how was your first contact with a turtle? What surprised you the most?
My first contact with a turtle as a tourist was snorkeling in Akumal Bay many years ago. I remember being very excited. My first contact as a VT was a morning encounter with a loggerhead last year. The entire team was there and we were all staring in awe at her when she decided to leave. When she almost mowed down the VT member in her way, we all learned how fast they can move if motivated. And not to get in their way.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering or not?
Yes. We need help and you will make friends for a lifetime as we work together to save these amazing animals.
If you could change something to improve the CEA turtle camp, what would it be?
I wish we could bring in younger Mexican nationals as part of the teams. We could use the help and I think it would instill a lifelong appreciation for the turtles. They would become turtle advocates.
What message would you like to share with the readers of this short review?
The Voluntourists work very hard to ensure that turtles continue to come to Akumal. There are multiple ways to help: volunteer time, donate money for supplies, Adopt a Turtle/a Nest/a Family. If you come to visit, PLEASE read the turtle checklist. Use only red lights at night during turtle season. No loud music after dark. And most importantly, if you are lucky enough to see them, stay back from the nesting mamas and hatchlings.

¿Porqué te enlistaste como Voluntourist en el Campamento Tortuguero de CEA?
Dos razones:
-Tengo cuatro nietos. Quiero que puedan venir a Akumal de visita y ver estas increíbles criaturas como yo lo hice hace varios años.
-Mi esposo Eric y yo nos unimos a la comunidad de Akumal el año pasado cuando nos jubilamos. Esta es una forma en la que contribuimos a la comunidad ayudando a preservar nuestro principal tesoro, las tortugas marinas.
¿Qué actividades realizas? ¿Cuál es tu papel en el campamento de tortugas marinas de CEA? Soy la principal trabajadora en el turno de la noche en Bahía Media Luna. Libero crías rescatadas. Observo a las mamás anidadoras cuando llegan a la costa, las conduzco alrededor de obstáculos y lejos de otros nidos, tomo medidas físicas de las tortugas, marco los nidos y documente todo.
¿Qué tan importante crees que es el trabajo de los VT? Es importante para el éxito del programa en un año atípico. Este año, los VT están haciendo la mayor parte del trabajo, ya que no tenemos biólogos / técnicos en la playa.
Hay muchas ONG diferentes ... ¿qué te hizo enamorarte de este proyecto?
La presencia de las tortugas marinas hace que Akumal sea un lugar único. Cuando elegimos nuestra casa de retiro, sabíamos que queríamos estar en la costa. Cuando llegas a casa después de pasar una mañana ayudando a las madres que
anidan ... ¿qué te llevas a nivel personal?
Aunque normalmente me duele todo el cuerpo después de una noche en la playa y me encuentro muy cansada, hay muchos momentos mágicos. Hace un par de noches vi más de un centenar de crías fluir hacia el mar. Me senté en la arena y sonriendo encantada. A veces, puedo rescatar tortugas bebés cuando estoy limpiando un nido. Probablemente, esas crías habrían muerto si nadie hubiera hecho eso. Tengo la experiencia de haber visto anidar tortugas marinas como pocas personas. Cuando ya ncseeuentran depositando sus huevos las toco y arrullo mientras tomo sus medidas, les doy unas palmaditas y les deseo "Vaya con dios" mientras se dirigen hacia el mar de nuevo. Puedo ver la maravilla en los ojos de los visitantes cuando ven a las crías y las mamás por primera vez. ¡Realmente es mágico! ¡¡¡Si tan solo quitara los dolores y molestias !!!
¿Qué cualidades crees que se necesitan para ser voluntario en la asociación?
Tienes que apreciar a la madre naturaleza y estar dispuesto a hacer lo que sea necesario. A veces, un mapache ataca un nido y hay huevos rotos o cadáveres con los que lidiar. Los VT son los que limpian el desorden y lo documentan. No siempre es fácil. Estamos en el calor y la humedad, rastrillando y removiendo arena durante el día. Estamos desenterrando nidos para limpiarlos y documentar su contenido. Por la noche trabajamos con animales salvajes que pesan 350 libras y que a menudo no cooperan mientras intentamos dirigirlos hacia o desde un área de la playa. El sentido del humor te ayuda a superarlo. Estar en buena forma física ayudará MUCHO. Todos bromeamos haciendo yoga tortuga, posiciones imposibles en la arena. La pregunta es si podemos volver a levantarnos después.
¿Recuerdas tu primer día como VT? ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia?
Realmente no recuerdo mi primer día. Lo que sí recuerdo es haber conocido a Rozita por primera vez. Apenas amanecía y esta señora estaba estudiando la arena detrás de nuestro condominio. Salí y le pregunté qué estaba haciendo. Vi las huellas en la arena y me explicó lo que le dijeron. Me enganché.
Y, ¿cómo fue tu primer contacto con una tortuga?
Mi primer contacto con una tortuga fue como turista mientras buceaba en la bahía de Akumal hace muchos años. Recuerdo estar muy emocionada. Mi primer contacto con una tortuga como VT, fue por la mañana con una tortuga caguama el año pasado. Todo el equipo estaba allí y todos la miramos asombrados cuando decidió irse. Fue cuando casi derriba a un miembro de VT que aprendimos que si están motivadas estas pueden moverse muy rápido por lo que no es buena idea interponerse en su camino.
¿Animarías a la gente a unirse a los Voluntourist? Si. Necesitamos ayuda y harás amigos para toda la vida mientras trabajamos juntos para salvar a estos increíbles animales.
Si pudieras cambiar algo para mejorar el campamento de tortugas CEA, ¿qué sería?
Ojalá pudiéramos incorporar a más jóvenes mexicanos como parte de los equipos de apoyo. Nos vendría bien la ayuda y creo que inculcaría un aprecio de por vida por las tortugas. Se convertirían en defensores de las tortugas.
¿Qué mensaje te gustaría compartir con los lectores de esta breve reseña?
Los Voluntuorists trabajan muy duro para asegurar que las tortugas sigan llegando a Akumal. Hay varias formas de ayudar: voluntariado, donación de dinero para suministros, adopción de una tortuga / un nido / una familia. Si viene de visita, POR FAVOR lea la lista de verificación de tortugas. Use solo luces rojas por la noche durante la temporada de tortugas. No poner música fuerte después del anochecer. Y lo más importante, si tiene la suerte de verlos, manténgase alejado de las mamás anidadoras y las crías.
