Does CEA (Centro Ecologico Akumal) provide snorkel tours?
No. Centro Ecologico Akumal does NOT offer or provide guided snorkel tours. Note that there are some local guides/operators claiming they work for CEA, however this is not the case.
Can you recommend a tour operator?
While there are several operators and price ranges to choose from, we recommend using operators that are insured, have guides trained in first aid/emergency response and follow CEA’s guidelines for snorkeling with turtles.
Some guides working in Akumal are officially certified through a course offered by CEA (authorized by the Tourism Secretariat) and have official ID cards. The certification confirms they have first aid/emergency response qualifications as well as knowledge of the ecosystem, turtles and experience with leading groups.
I was told it is mandatory to use a lifejacket. Is this true?
As an independent snorkeler, the use of lifejackets is not mandatory, despite what you may have been told. Wearing a lifejacket is recommended; particularly for safety reasons as well as ensuring that you stay afloat and prevent your fins from kicking the reef.
Note that if you are entering the bay as part of an organized group, you may be required to wear a lifejacket as part of their company policies and practices.
Is it mandatory to have a snorkel guide?
No. Hiring a guide is not mandatory. It is a good idea if you are new to the area, but it is not mandatory. You should become familiar with the guidelines, beach warning flags and understand a bit about the bay, including currents and weather conditions. You can get this information from the lifeguards or information in the CEA building where you enter the beach.
Can I go outside the buoys to snorkel?
Yes, it is fine to go outside the buoys, but please proceed with caution as you will be crossing the boat navigation channels and always stay within the bay. It is recommended to stay at least 30 meters away from the reef break. If you plan to venture outside the buoys, know your limits and consider a lifejacket.
Are there any rules or guidelines that I should follow when snorkeling?
